TERRELL COUNTY LIBRARY FRIENDS MEMBERSHIP ELECTS BOARD MEMBERS FOR 1999-2000

The annual meeting of the members of the Terrell County Friends of the Library was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 28, in the Library's Carnegie Room.  Vice-president Willie Bruenner welcomed everyone and called on several of the Board members to make year-end reports.

The Nominating Committee offered the following names for election to the Board:  Phyllis Bennett, Beverly Everritt, Arline Hufstetler, Bernice Jackson, Bob Kenney, Paula Parker, and Laurel Smith.  They unanimously elected to serve two year terms.

Claudia Copeland, County Librarian, presented a brief history of the Friends group and highlighted activities for the four years of its existence.  She reported the Friends have donated over $12,000 to purchase books, audios, and software; they have given money for landscaping, Summer Reading Club, Christmas decorations, shelving, a camera and a scanner.  They have held four book sales, two brick projects, two open house receptions and two author book signings.  They also  publish this newsletter and sponsor a book discussion group which meets at the library monthly.

The most critical need is for funds to purchase new books.  The local library budget is not sufficient to cover operational expenses and still purchase needed books.  Money the Friends group has given for for this purpose has helped to partially fulfill this need.  At the June meeting the Board voted to donate an additional $2,000 to be used for children's books.

The Board of Directors meetings are held at 6:30 every second Monday.

Near and Far
    Genealogy NEWS

Genealogy visitors literally came from as far east and as far west as one can travel in the past few months looking for their roots.

Paul and Elvira Flanagan from Longview, Washington, came to research the Sweatman family; Hugh and Betty Grimes of Houma, Louisiana, wanted to find the grave of James Grimes; and Diane Early from Charleston, South Carolina, looked for information about the Odom/Lee families.

Other recent researchers to use the genealogy room at the library included Charles and Marian Lewis from Woodland, Texas; Ronald Watson form Pittsboro, North Carolina; Clara Spivey from Louisville, Alabama; and Arcola Bozeman Lopez from Sylvester, Georgia.  Leigh Whitney and Emily O'Neal from Dawson also visited.

287 CHILDREN PARTICIPATE IN LIBRARY'S SUMMER READING CLUB

The "Chill Out With Books" summer got off to a great start with a magic show on June 4.  The statistics of this year's Summer Reading Club at the library increased significantly over those of last year.

During the eight weeks of activities 287 children participated, 2,989 juvenile books were checked out, 1,993 books were read, and 714 children attended 32 programs.

The Terrell County Friends of the Library organization was the local sponsor.  Awards for reading achievement by the children and refreshments for the programs were purchased with money from the Friends.

Two area businesses, Pizza Hut and McDonalds provided food certificates as reading incentives for the kids who participated.

The big prize winners were Sabrina Hicks who read 202 books, and Chris Benton who read 168 books and Jetta Sartwell who read 130.

FRIENDS REPORT BOOK SALE A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS

"Our book sale of July 9th and 10th surpassed all our expectations; total sales came to $1,213.00 which far exceeds any of our previous sales,' said Arline Hufstetler, Friends member and Chairperson for the annual Friends Book Sale.

Friends thanks go to Gilley's Signs and Graphics for donating a 4'x8' banner announcing the sale.  This helped draw people off the highway who would have never heard of the sale.

Thanks to Rhonda Gordon for arranging outstanding publicity including the sign from Gilley's and to the following who transported, sorted, arranged and sold books:  Phyllis Bennett, Lynn Bolton, Josh Bolton, Ann Chambless, Claudia Copeland, Ann Downer, Beverly Everritt, Jo Flournoy, Arline Hufstetler, Bob Kenney, Doris Kenney,  Jim Parker, Paula Parker and Laurel Smith.

And lastly thanks to all who came to buy books.  All of these people made the Friends sale so successful.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

Since many individuals and businesses who had joined the Friends once, had not renewed their memberships on an annual basis, the Board of Directors decided to begin the fiscal year by updating their membership list.

Each board member took ten names from the list to contact about renewals.  This event proved to be very successful.  Since the membership drive was begun, the Friends have received 50 renewals.  This was great news since without the support of the community, the Friends would not be able to help the library.

Each year the Friends raise money to help the library raise money to help the library buy books and supplies.  The Friends gave $4,000 last year to purchase books.  It is our goal to raise another $4,000 to give library for books this year.

How can you help?  Join the Friends and encourage your friends to join also.
