SPRING OF 2001 PROVES TO BE A BUSY AND EVENTFUL TIME FOR LIBRARY FRIENDS

During the month of April and May, Terrell County Library Friends were an active bunch.  In addition to their monthly meetings every second Monday, a number of other activities were held.

The second annual Friends Poetry Competition in cooperation with all Terrell County High Schools was again held in April this year.  The four top winners, Irene Blackshear, Lee Trice, Lee Marshall and Cole Swindell, all received cash prizes at the Poetry Reading Recital held at the Terrell County Library on April 23.  This event was open to the public and the Friends provided refreshments for all who attended.

On April 27 & 28 the Friends held their yearly book sale at the library.  Friends Board members Arline Huftstetler and Phyllis Bennett along with other Friends worked all year sorting and packing donated and discarded books to be sold in April.

The sale was again very successful, netting the Friends organization over $1,000.  Books left from the sale were donated by the Friends to the Adult Literacy Program here in Terrell County and the library at Terrell County Correctional Institution.

In May the Friends group voted to donate a lump sum of money to sponsor the Vacation Reading Program, which encourages children to use the library and reading during the months school is out.  This money will be used to provide supplies, programs, and prizes for kids who participate.
