Spotlight On A Library Volunteer

Martha Spurlock

As with most of those who volunteer, much of their hard work goes unnoticed by people in a community.  The Friends have chosen to spotlight such a person, Martha Spurlock.  Mrs. Spurlock is a genuine southern lady and a dedicated library volunteer in the genealogy department.

Mrs. Spurlock graciously dedicates time each week to respond to out-of-town requests for information about Terrell County ancestors.  She was a charter member of the Friends of the Library and served on its steering committee.  She is currently a member of the Kinchafoonee Regional Library Board of Trustees and the Terrell County Board of Trustees.

Besides her volunteer work at the library, Mrs. Spurlock is also involved with the Terrell County Foster Children's Program.  She is married to A.D. Spurlock, and they have four children. She is retired from the Terrell County School System where she served as Curriculum Director.

Our hats are off to Martha Spurlock for her unselfish spirit and untiring dedication to our library.

Near and Far

Genealogy News

Old newspapers have long been important source of genealogical information.  People who are tracing their family line will find the Dawson News Index very helpful.

This 11,000 card index contains information on births, deaths, and marriages reported in the Dawson News which has been in continuous publication since 1866.

Each card includes a name, the event being reported, the date of that event, and the page number and date of the Dawson News issue.

At present the Index covers the years from 1866 through 1930.  Subsequent years will be added in the future.

(Ed. Note:  Phyllis Bennett, a library volunteer and Friends Board member, is responsible for this index and has worked on it for several years.  Mrs. Bennett was spotlighted for her library volunteer work in June 1996 Friends Newsletter.)
